Remote Recording Best Practices

You don't need to hire a professional video crew to make quality video content.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

You don't need to hire a professional video crew to make quality video content.

But - there's a few easy things you can do to make sure you look professional from your "Desktop Studio."

1. Face a window.
Let the light shine on your face. Just make sure the light is "soft."

2. Elevate your webcam to be level with your eyes.
You know, the book / box stacking thing. It makes a huge difference.

3. Don't use AirPods as your mic.
At the risk of sounding nerdy, the frequency response is poor and they process your audio way too much. It's better to just use your internal laptop mic.

4. Make eye contact with the lens.
Your viewers want to feel connected to you. To suspend disbelief for a moment that they aren't watching you on a screen, but face to face in-person. The closer you can bring your gaze to the lens of your camera, the closer you are to replicating this experience. Reference your notes between takes instead of during to maintain connection.

5. Earmark the first 15 mins to shake the nerves out.
If your body is in adrenaline mode, you're going to look and sound afraid / unsure. The cutting room floor is your friend. Bank on throwing out the first 15 mins of footage while you warm up. It's always a good idea to get a retake of the introduction at the end of your session.
